Great bargain

It's on sale this week at Target for $109 so I thought I'd write a review in case anyone wants to get one cheap without having to pay shipping.



Perfect size for one person--maybe even 2. I would have liked a bigger freezer compartment but it's bigger than it looks. At a medium setting the frozen foods stay frozen and the refrigerated foods are plenty cold. The thermostat actually works.

Gets cold in the back-- REALLY cold

For the most part this refridgerator has done a good job keeping the drinks cold and the size is reasonable: small on the outside big on the inside perfect for the dorm room. The interior is sound and the temperature is very cold even on the minimum setting.



So why did it lose three stars? Because of one minor flaw and one serious problem. The minor flaw is that while the fridge keeps the things inside cold the top and sides get uncomfortably warm. Not enough to set anything on fire but definitely not the thing you want to put your bare hand on for long. Good if you want to keep lunch warm though.



As for the serious problem-- the pipe in the back gets really really cold. After running this for three weeks my mother noticed that the fridge was leaking water. Upon further inspection I noticed that it wasn't a leak...it was water dripping from MELTING ICE THAT HAD FORMED around one of the pipes in the back of the fridge just outside of the insulation that had wrapped around the pipe. The chunk was about an inch and a half in diameter and looked like a chunk of white foam wrapped around the pipe.



It took me 15 minutes to ease the ice off then as I was inspecting the pipe under the insulating cover another chunk of ice popped out. All told it took about 20 minutes to get the mess handled but I'm glad my mother noticed the water dripping when she did otherwise I fear that the fridge might have short circuited and cost us $100 in the process.



EDIT: In regards to the ice--the refridgerator's parts seem to be watertight so you don't have to worry about the ice harming it. I do recommend that should you buy this fridge to either put some foam/insulation around the pipe to reinforce the one already present or more simply just putting a tray under the ice to catch the drips.More detail ...

Just Turn The Thermostat To The Desired Temperature !

The EdgeStar has much to boast of: it is lightweight easy to carry and move roomy attractive and versatile as both a refrigerator and (marginally) as a freezer. Setup is simple and the price is excellent. Strongly tainting this appliance however is a thermostat dial which is either incompetently designed incompetently calibrated or both



Before continuing let's not fail to note the advertised description for this product: "Just turn the thermostat to select the appropriate temperature for your application!"



Falling with equal snugness on the Things That Make You Go Duh list is the instruction manual telling us that "The knob has markings to indicate the relative temperature settings but in general turning the knob counter-clockwise corresponds to colder temperatures."



So if we turn the dial one way it gets colder. Turn it the other way it gets warmer. We can handle that. The markings on the dial bear witness to and confirm this elegant conception of appliance design:



regrigeration------> MIN......OFF.....MAX



freezing-----------> MIN......||......MAX



Interesting then that in practice there is *no* temperature change in the freezer when dialed to "MIN" or dialed to "MAX". I measure both at a steady 20 degrees.



With some playing one discovers that colder temperatures are achieved erratically within the petite 1.5 millimeter space between the two vertical lines separating "Min" and "Max".



Moving counter clockwise per instructions along the dial after the arrow marked "Freezer" the temperatures I normally get are in order:



20 (when dialed to "Min")

15 (when dialed to the left vertical line)

4 or 12 degrees (when between the two vertical lines)

10 (when dialed to the right vertical line)

20 (when dialed to "Max).



Perhaps the advertised 0 degree capability is buried someplace within the 1.5 mm space between the two vertical lines but after several days of moving the dial minutely to the left or right I'm unable to find it.



Additionally after reaching the coldest discernable temperature of 4 degrees once it took me 2 days to find it again while continuing my hunt for the elusive advertised 0 degrees.



This is especially frustrating since it takes about half a day or more for a temperature change to be reached within the freezer after moving the thermostat dial -- and when you move it you don't know for certain if you're making it colder or warmer.

Which is to say this isn't a particular fast appliance: The manual recommends not introducing frozen food to the freezer until it's been turned to the coldest setting (wherever that is) for at least 2 hours after turning it on. That seems wildly optimistic to me. In practice it takes roughly 5 hours to freeze undersized 1" ice cubes from power-up using the tray bundled with this freezer.



To its credit the EchoStar is fine as a refrigerator and fine as a freezer as long as you aren't picky about hitting the the normally recommended 0 degrees for frozen foods.

But sorry it should not require several days to find the coldest temperature on a device by nudging a dial back and forth within a space of a milimeter. And oddly enough even without the instruction booklet telling me to do so I fully expect "Max" to be colder than "Min" and not be actually located at some microscopicly ambiguous point between the two.



"Just turn the thermostat to select the appropriate temperature for your application!"

Second Time Around

I purchased this refrigerator for my office. It is to be shared by a group of 5 people so I wanted one that was a little bigger than the typical compacts. I paid for overnight deliverly as others had suggested. The unit arrived in a box that had been previously opened. I was a bit worried when I removed the item from the box. It had some large dents on the side but was otherwise ok. Once I plugged it in I realized there were bigger issues. The motor was very loud and was cycling constantly. It would run for seven minutes and then would be off for four minutes then on for seven off for four - yes I actually timed it. Everytime the unit came on it startled me. At first I thought that once the motor broke in that it would become quiet. That did not happen. After having the unit for 24 hours and spilling a cup of coffee on my desk from my rattled nerves I called Amazon for a replacement unit.



The new refrigerator arrived the next day. Once again it arrived in a box that had previously been opened. The replacement had a large dent on the door but otherwise works great. It is so quiet. I barely notice it when the motor is running. What a difference! I actually check it on occasion to make sure that it is working because I don't notice it at all. I switched doors with the first refrigerator and now I have a unit that has no significant dents and it doesn't interrupt my work environment. The actual refrigerator is nice looking and has a lot of interior space. After the experience with the first one I am a bit concerned about the reliability but for now I am satisfied.More detail ...

Will almost certainly arrive damaged with ground shipping...

... foregoing the two reviews about shipping damage I thought I'd try ordering this product for several reasons:



1) The hi-res dealer images of it from Sanyo.com made it look like one sexy fridge

2) The energy rating was good

3) I knew if the product did arrive damaged Amazon would replace it or refund my money anyway

4) I have Amazon Prime so I figured paying $3.99 for overnight shipping would also make the delivery people think this was a special product since it was going overnight and not being sent across the country via Ground shipping and abused in the process.



Well the product arrived today and initially I thought "This can't be good."



The box was extremely tattered... and the top was ripped open. I also heard rattling as the FedEx man helped me carry it up the stairs. Then he left without even getting a signature. Oh and at my front door the FedEx man just dropped the box on the ground in front of me.



I opened the box upstairs and saw horrible horrible packaging as others have mentioned. The box was all beat up and several of the inch or less thick padding was cracked and damaged.



Luckily the fridge seemed to make it through intact... no dents and it worked. The rattling as I carried it was the compressor... I still don't know if this is normal though.



These fridges are indeed shipped on a pallet you can see that from the shipping sticker from Sanyo to Amazon's Nevada warehouse. Three fridges per pallet. All Amazon does is stick a FedEx/UPS sticker on these boxes and ship them off. If I didn't get this sent overnight I can almost guarantee the fridge would've beat beat to hell going ground from Nevada to New York.



As for this part of the item description

"To keep the refrigerator looking brand new its stainless-steel door has a clear acrylic coating that eliminates fingerprints and is easy to keep clean."



Well it won't be happening for me as the clear acrylic coating came ripped halfway down the upper right corner of the fridge so I really had no choice but to rip all the rest of it off.



The fridge works and it DOES look amazingly sexy but unless you have Prime or want to pay for expedited shipping this will almost certainly come damaged until Amazon decides to start packaging these adequately. And really I don't see why they don't because it's just a hassle for the end customer and an expensive dime on their end to pay for return shipping and then shipping again for a replacement.More detail ...

Works great easy to use fun to pour

If you love draft beer but don't drink enough to need a full keg this is for you!



I like my beer ice cold poured in a SMALL frozen glass .... I dont drink enough to warrant a full size type draft keg machine with all the hassles that come with it (like Co2) this unit is simple: just drop the draughtkeg in and your done. This unit has a thermostat setting that lets you set it to 36 degrees the other unit will not allow you to lower the setting so this alone makes it worth the extra $20.



With the draughtkeg and beertender you get a nice little fridge who's sole job is to keep that keg ice cold and easy to pour... since it has a bottom drip tray you can pour your draught " english " style by letting the first half second just pour out to clear the foam then quickly put your glass in to get a nice pour with little foam - you cant do that when pulling from the big fridge....



What makes it nice is you can pour as much or more importantly as little as you want... like I said I like a small beer glass that gives me nice cold gulps of beer then just pour more - no wasted warm beer just nice and cold PLUS its fun to pour ! Lets face it this is a luxury item because you could just keep it in the big fridge and pour from there but thats no fun! Plus the big fridge is not going to maintain that keg at a constant 36 degrees!



The unit itself is pretty small and very light - it uses some induction type cooling so there is no typical fridge motor its a small fan - now this fan will work hard at first to get that keg down to temp but once its done it gets quieter - its loud enough that you should not put it in an area that is normally quiet .. also since it does not use a fridge type motor it will not work outdoors! It uses the ambient air to help cool the unit - anything over 85 degrees and it will not be able to maintain the temp - so indoor use only.



So to sum up - if you like the Heineken draghtkegs you will enjoy this item - is it necessary ? No but you will get a much more enjoyable feeling when pouring that perfectly chilled draught. I hope Heineken adds more to the draughtkeg line up like they have in Europe... remember it only works with Heineken so if you dont like Heineken then this item will not work for you...



B95 or B90 ? Spend a little more and get the fancy lcd screen and temp control - especially if you like the cold beer because the other unit is preprogrammed at 39 or 40 deg ... but some people like a warmer draught but the price difference is so little you might as well ' go all the way ' ....

No icemaker problems great fit

Ok 1st things first - a- Icemaker works fine and we use it for our Florida summer Margaritas... and for our nightly icewater and for a 3 person household all the way around plenty o'ice. This seems to be a mjor issue in the reviews. There is a 36 hour icemaker setup procedure included by Samsung that we followed exactly and no problems at all with ice.



We got the beast from Best Buy best price (at the time of this writing ~ [..]-2100 (we paid 2100) and 36 months no interest payments vs 12 months from Lowes and Sears.



My wife thinks we lost room in the doors we made up a ton of room in the freezer plus the rightside door is plenty of room.



Great configurations pizza tray is lost on us in the freezer but the Costco worthy bottom freezer keeps plenty o' meat for me.Well worth it in space delivery was fine no issues with service as we have not called in delivery was great. The delivery guys said they delivered one elsewhere where the recipient paid [..] or so may not have been the real stainless one.



Would buy it again that's the best i can say. Only issue what a pain in the butt keeping the stainless smudgefree! Its our 1st stainless fridge!More detail ...

Disappointing

My wife and I bought this refrigerator for our new home. I am usually a big fan of LG products because of their focus on making them user friendly with some well-thought-out features. However this product has been a disappointment. Less than 2 months after our purchase we had to have the computer control board replaced. The ice maker frequently gets jammmed with refrozen ice cubes because of the design of the outlet which allows ice cubes to thaw and then refreeze at the outlet. In addition the top freezer drawer gets ice build-up that makes the drawer hard to open. I thought defrosting freezers was something that was in the past! GE what happened?

I've always wanted a side by side and finally saved up enough to purchase this one. I was told it was a good refrigerator well made and all that. It did work for about 10 months before it started blitzing. Lucky for me it was before the warranty ended not so lucky for me & 4 to 5 visits from the store repairman I believe my problems still have not been resolved. The weird thing is my model number is GSH22JSXSA yet its the same side by side using the model number GSH22JSXSS. No repair person can figure out why my model number ends in SA instead of SS and yes my side by side is stainless steel so that's not it. One repair guy said he believes it is just a newer model as an explaination for this diversion however plug the model in and nothing absolutely nothing comes up as that model number. Ok on to the problems. My s/s started freezing up every thing inside and melt occured along the front of the door and along the sides which would of course freeze over. I had frozen drips hanging from the shelves and snow covered foods so thick you had to melt it off by running under warm water to know what was in those packages. The first repairman said the situation inside was our fault and occured due to leaving the door open. However that was not the case but he over-rode any thing I had to say to the contrary; was rude and very disrespectful. I work or probably would have noticed something that was happening with the s/s sooner. One day during the weekend I happened to open up the freezer section and actually felt heat. Now that was odd. I noticed moisture along the walls of the freezer section as every thing was melting and no evaporation of this moisture occured. The freezer section was really hot towards the top above the ice bin melting the icecubes causing the half ice and water to coagulate around the auger. The defroster/heater wasn't turning off in a timely manner and melting everything. Weirder yet after this thaw or what I called intermittent freezer hot flashes the freezer would go to the opposite extreme of too cold refreezing all the foods stored there even at a setting of 1. Guess what the door wasn't left opened and hey GE I discovered it wasn't our fault. On several occasions I smelled a burning scent and when I opened the freezer during an especially strong smell of something burning the heat was more intense from within and the light bulb inside blew up. Not just burn out it exploded and shards of tiny pieces of glass were on my food in the freezer and my feet on the floor. I still don't know why this happened other than what the repair person said that the heater wasn't working right and stays on too long. Heat rises and ice melts. He didn't seem concerned that this might be a safety issue the defroster running too long doesn't explain the burning scent and why the light bulb disintegrated. Not to mention what could have happened if I had young children under foot. Mother board replaced thermostat & sensor replaced heater replaced ice cube maker replaced. Once these things were fixed well sort of after months of ice cubes melting to the auger so ice didn't dispense I was advised after the last fix that the cubes should dispense just fine. Well the ice cubes still aren't being dispensed. I noticed after the last fix last Friday ice cubes are not melting staying separate and so far no intense heat aka hot flashes. I can't say the freezer is running optimally not yet... its still running colder than it should even at a setting of 1 "but" I haven't noticed burning smells recently no snow is covering my foods there are no frozen drips hanging from the shelves or icecycles along the sides and front. Its only been 3 days so all I can say is we will see. But I have to admit I'm a bit afraid of this appliance whether it will possibly heat up again and maybe cause a fire I worry that the light bulb will explode again I wonder if it will ever work like it should & I'm hoping I didn't waste the money I spent to buy it. Great product

The wine cooler does take a number of times to clean before the chemical smell finally goes but seems to be a well constructed unit for the price. My only real issue is the spacing of the draws and the fact each draw only holds 11 bottles 12 would have been nice. GREAT MINI Fridge

This thing is AWESOME. An office fridge with a real freezer.

We've had it for over a month or so in my department. It's the envy of the building.

Okay loading the drinks thing is a little weak as if you're a moron and don't pay attention the cans kind of fall into position. I've only done that once or twice...



As a bonus I actually want to keep food in this thing I've never eaten so healthy and cheaply.

Great little fridge!

This fridge replaced the old one in my apartment because the old one died and upon it being delivered I was a little worried that it wasn't big enough since it was so much smaller than my old one. My worries were squelched after I started using it this is a nice space saving refrigerator perfect for small apartments or bar areas in homes. It has a very deep frost-free freezer with lots of space one adjustable rack and space in the door as well. The fridge area has two adjustable glass shelves plenty of space in the door and a nice crisper in the bottom. I love the fact that it has separate temperature controls for the fridge and freezer. This is all I need and more in a great stainless steel look. Definitely worth it if you need a fridge for small spaces or a second smaller one!More detail ...

Lower than expectations.

I bought this fridge because I was sick of not having a freezer that worked properly. Now I have a killer freezer but the fridge is wimpy. The freezer is so wonderfully cold that it seems to be sucking the life out of the refrigerator part of it. I open the door and it's just not cold. I originally purchased the Sanyo SR-4912M refrigerator in November 2007. Ice collected on the back of the refrigerator and ALL my food froze. Since there is no authorized repair company in my area Sanyo replaced it with a new refrigerator which worked fairly well for about 7 months. I bought a digital thermometer with an inside probe so that I could obtain a more accurate reading (I checked the accuracy of the thermometer with other thermometers and refrigerators). The temperature fluctuates from the 20's F. to the 50's F. and freezes my food. The highest safe temperature for a refrigerator is 40 F. The Sanyo rep at 800-421-5013 said that it is in the 50's when it is defrosting. I challenge that the auto defrost cycle should take 4-6-8 hours--if this is how the Sanyo refrigerator functions then they are putting food in the danger zone for bacteria to grow and cause food poisoning. I was informed that the warranty on the original refrigerator has expired and therefore this replacement refrigerator has no warranty coverage except for the compressor. The Sanyo rep could not understand why I am upset. Since I now have had two (2) Sanyo SR-4912M refrigerators and neither of them has functioned adequately I think this speaks volumes to the lack of quality and DANGER TO HEALTH of this refrigerator.
